Honestly, until a few years ago, I thought one shirt plus one jacket equals layering. And while yes, that is "technically" layering, it's also very predicable. And nothing about that is interesting... But since then, I've learned that layering can be so much more than that, and that it can also be so much fun. This past winter I made it a goal to break some rules and think outside the box when it comes to layering. Partially because I wanted to stay warm and partially because I wanted to dress more interestingly. Sooo.... Here are 5 ways I've learned to layer.
1) Layering with a basic turtleneck...
I've found that layering with a basic turtleneck is the most simple way to layer. You can throw it under a sweater, an embellished tank, and even under a button up. I like J.Crew's tissue turtlenecks because they add an extra layer without all the bulk. To mix it up, try layering with a printed turtleneck to add some more visual interest.
2) Layering with a button-up...

Because I like to stay modest, I feel like I am constantly wearing cardigans, cardigans, and more cardigans. Seriously, I get so sick of it. That's why recently I started wearing my button-up tops under my sleeveless shirts. It's a new alternative to the stuffy-old cardigan and it's also super-chic... Now that's what we call a win-win.
3) Layering with necklaces...
This is one of my favorite ways to layer. Layering necklaces, bracelets, or any other jewelry on top of each other. When doing this, definitely don't be afraid to mix metals when layering jewelry. My one rule here is to always keep it simple everywhere else when going heavy on the metal.
4) Layering with prints...

If you live in a warmer climate, first of all, I'm jealous. Second, layering can be difficult because who wants to be walking around sweating, with 4293 layers on? If this is you, try layering with different prints. Just make sure the different prints you're wearing share at least one common color. Like my outfit here shares the common color of navy.
5) Layering with color...
This is again good for you in warmer climates. I love layering bright colors year round. I've found the easiest way to do this is through statement necklaces {like the ever so popular bubble necklace!} I try to keep my mixing and layering of colors down to 3-4 colors. I can imagine that any more than that might be a little... Crazy!
...
I hope that was helpful to you ladies! What's your favorite way to layer?

Thanks for this post Corinne! I'm definitely in need of a layering for beginners course. I consider myself a simple dresser (i.e. one shirt, one jacket) but I really need to get my butt in gaer and experiment with layers. Great tips!

I love layering with turtle necks! Best thing during the winter.
ReplyDeleteI currently live in Sri Lanka with my family, and even though I do not miss cold weather, I totally miss layering. It is one of the only good things about cooler weather. I try to find ways to layer, and I think I am going to definitely try layering more necklaces. That is going to be fun! Thank you!
